Employment Coordinator

Project RISE (Resilience, Independence, Self-Advocacy, Employment) is a transition program, focusing on providing blind and low vision students with the skills necessary to become competitively employed. Students between the ages of 14 and 21 participate in monthly meetings during the school year, participating in workshops designed to make them more competitive in the job market. Students then engage in a work experience such as a job, paid or unpaid internship, or volunteer experience during the summer months, or during the academic year as appropriate.

Project RISE is seeking an employment coordinator to secure work experiences for our students. The candidate will help identify and build partnerships with employers in the community, matched to our students’ strengths and aptitudes.

Approximate time commitment: 20 hours per week from February 2024 through July 2024.

Location: This is a telecommuting position with a preference for a candidate based in Virginia with familiarity of state geography, employment, and professional networks.



Roles and Responsibilities



  • Review existing materials and develop a strategic plan for employer and community partner recruitment/retention
  • Build new relationships with employers across the state, or with national entities with state subsidiaries
  • Develop a database of contact information and other relevant details for employers, connections of employers, school guidance counselors, and similar career readiness resources
  • Work with mentors, staff, and students, to understand student strengths
  • Pair approximately 15 students with work experiences
  • Track and schedule informational interviews to be completed by students
  • Provide feedback on student resumes and application materials
  • Help prepare students for interviews
  • Help prepare student for work placements, including initial on site support as needed
  • Assist with procuring accommodations in partnership with DBVI vocational rehabilitation counselors and other resources
  • Be available to engage with employers Monday through Friday during normal business hours
  • Track weekly progress and share updates on regular staff calls with the program coordinator
  • Track student employer application processes and share opportunities with students and their mentors as they become available

This position reports to the Project RISE program coordinator, Joe Orozco. Compensation is commensurate with experience.



Requirements for Personnel Contractors




All those contracted to provide services are required to go through a background check, performed by the state of Virginia. If awarded a contract, individuals will be providing services subject to the terms outlined in the independent contract. The compensation excludes additional benefits of any kind.
